In the sea of information on exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Everyone seems to have an opinion, but how do you know what’s best for you? Gaining a better understanding of how your body functions as a whole, will help you cut through the noise and discern what makes sense for your body, your goals, and your life.
Everyone should know how their body works and how to take care of it. We all have one—it’s a requirement to be alive. You can influence greatly how well and for how long your body functions, having a huge impact on the quality of your life. Knowing how your body works and how to take care of it is critical to live to the best of your best life
I’ve been learning about how the body works and how to improve it for almost 35 years. It started when I was 15 and picked up the plastic cement-filled weights in the basement of the home I grew up in. I essentially “wrote” my first workout that day. I truly enjoyed it and kept it up. Six years later when I came across an article on nutrition, that was that—I fell in love with understanding the body and improving it, setting the trajectory of my life in motion.
I didn’t always want to work as a fitness professional. The truth of the matter is I never really wanted to train people. My friends at the time would tell me I should, but my response was always the same, “I don’t want to tell people what to do”. And I didn’t. It was a chance encounter at a restaurant that led me into the profession. I struggled at first. But, over time I found my way by doing things I felt good about. One was, to give it away. Don’t tell anyone what to do, give it away freely and whoever wants to listen, will. And two, have fun. It’s fitness, not calculus. Don’t make it a big deal and enjoy it. So that’s been my MO—enjoy what I do and give freely what I know. I’ve made a career doing that (not perfectly, mind you), and met great people along the way.
On a more personal note, I’m a bit of a nerd. I am an avid learner, with interests in astrophysics, evolutionary psychology, human behavior, history, biology, and science. I can talk for hours intellectually and have yet to find someone who can listen for as long as I can gab. Depending on the company, this is either a character flaw or my greatest strength. I’ve learned to adjust accordingly.
